Why we need Euthanasia

Respect for autonomy, free will, freedom of choice does not factor in when we say we have the right to control their own body and life. States and nations create laws that prevent citizens being able to choose when and how they die. Dying with dignity out of compassion can be made a reality when euthanasia can be safely regulated by government legislation, personal legal consent and stringent laws preventing others from dictating an individual’s time to go.

Some argue that legalizing euthanasia is a slippery slope, by giving other people more power to end a patient’s life. Can a reliant legal model be built around what warrants a mercy killing in order to prevent a dangerous precedent? It can be done if lawmakers put their life into it, no pun intended. Unlike few countries in Europe, Canada has a watertight legal system surrounding euthanasia.

The religious argument does not hold true for atheists or agnostics.

Many of the practices used in end-of-life care are essentially a type of euthanasia. For example, palliative sedation is active euthanasia. Hence, we might as well properly legalise and regulate euthanasia.

I have to add lastly, that bodily autonomy of our own bodies is what we should be fighting for, not that of others. Aiding and abetting of suicide and genocide remains illegal. The buck stops at ending the life of mine or my pet’s the way I want. No one has a right to the lives or problems of others.

Everybody has to die eventually while we are a mortal race. Hence, no doctor or any other health professional should carry the burden of extending life toward immortality.
